Development
of the Lois Rowland Butterfly Garden began in May 2000 and continues each
spring. Girl Scouts have helped plant trees, shrubs and perennials with
blooms that attract butterflies or are a food source for butterfly larva.
In 2003 a flagstone courtyard and
benches were installed adjacent to the 10,000 square foot butterfly garden
as a memorial to Lois Rowland a former member of the Modie Park
Conservancy Board of Directors and a serious gardener who contributed
greatly to the butterfly garden project.
In 2003 the addition of an
underground sprinkler system simplified some of the maintenance for this
area. Future projects include surfacing the gravel path and creating
signage and interpretative material.
