| Modie Park Conservancy Description
The original Ruth Rowell Modie Wildlife Park donation consists of natural spring flowing out of a steep draw and a series of ponds connected by wetland wildlife habitat. Except for a paved walking path from the end of 21st Avenue to the end of 13th Street and plantings for habitat improvement, very little development is planned for this area. An area owned by horticulturist and former Lewiston Parks and Recreation Manager Gregory Eaves is northwest of Ruth Rowell Modie Wildlife Park and connected by a narrow corridor. It has been designated the Veterans’ Grove Arboretum. A gravel path system provides access from the end of 21st Avenue near the Idaho State Veterans’, from 8th Street near a pair of historic stone towers and from 10th Street near another historic tower. A project to bring irrigation water to this area was completed in June of 2000. Efforts will now center on raising money to plant and develop this part of the park complex. A butterfly garden, wildflower garden, and Xeriscape demonstration project are planned. Anabel Osborn has donated her home and grounds as Osborn Interpretive Center to the Idaho Foundation for Parks and Lands to become part of the park complex. A three-acre parcel, west of 8th Street between the 1900 and 2100 block, has been designated as Xeriscape Arboretum to demonstrate and experiment with plants that thrive in arid climates with very little water. |
