A demonstration of water wise landscaping was identified in a public meeting in 1994 as a desirable feature for Modie Park.

A Steering Committee began meeting monthly in October, 2007, to plan a Xeriscape Demonstration and seek funding for it.

One and a half acres at the north end of the park is the location of Phase One of the Demonstration. Some Xeric trees including Arizona Cypress and Apache Pine were planted there by MPC volunteers in 1995.

The Xeriscape Demonstration will:

• Demonstrate the need for water conservation.
• Create an arboretum of native and introduced species of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals that can reduce the need for irrigation in landscape designs.
• Include comparison plantings of drought resistant turf grasses.
• Introduce the principles of Xeriscaping which are:
  
  
  • Planning and design
  • Soil Management
  • Create practical turf areas
  • Use drought tolerant plants
  • Mulches
  • Irrigate efficiently
  • Maintain the landscape
